Famco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Leesburg Owner’s Guide

We install Famco chimney caps in Leesburg, VA, with typical installed pricing between $285 and $540 depending on flue size, cap series, and roof access. Most single-flue Famco cap swaps run $285 to $385 on a one-story roof, and we carry the common sizes on the truck so many jobs are done in a single visit. The usual discovery story: a homeowner hears rain against the damper, finds a rust line on the flue tile during a summer roof check, or watches a squirrel disappear down the flue and realizes the existing cap is gone or torn open.

If you have a Famco product and a failed or failing part, this page covers what you need to know. We’re an independent chimney service company in Leesburg; we’re not affiliated with Famco, but we install their caps regularly and know their sizing and model lines well.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco makes a few distinct chimney cap lines, and the part you replace depends on which one you have. The FC series is the standard single-flue cap: galvanized or stainless steel, mesh screens, and a slip-fit base that matches nominal flue tile outside dimensions. The FCR series (sometimes labeled “round draft” caps) fits round flues and uses a clamp or adhesive-tightened base rather than slip-fit. The multi-flue MSC series spans larger openings and mounts with brackets across the crown. If your cap has a model stamp on the underside of the lid or on the collar, the part number tells you the series; if the stamp is gone, we measure the flue tile and match from there.

The gotcha with Famco specifically: their caps are sized to outside flue tile dimensions, not the inside flue opening. A 13″ x 13″ outside tile uses an FC-1313; a 13″ x 13″ inside opening uses something larger. Homeowners ordering online by eye routinely get this wrong, and the cap arrives an inch too small. We see this a few times a month in Leesburg, especially with older homes near Balls Bluff Battlefield where original clay tiles ran small and builders mixed sizes.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Famco’s stainless steel caps are well built for the price, and when the base and mesh are intact, we’re comfortable matching part-for-part. When the base collar has rusted through, we prefer a full replacement cap over reusing old material. Aftermarket equivalents exist, but on Famco caps the mesh gauge and lid pitch differ enough that we default to genuine Famco unless the customer requests otherwise and we can confirm fitment on site.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • Water in the firebox after hard rain. The cap lid has rusted through or the base seal has opened, letting water run straight down the flue. In Leesburg’s freeze-thaw winters, a small gap widens fast once ice gets behind the collar.
  • Rust streaks on the flue tile below the cap. The cap’s galvanized base has begun corroding and the runoff has stained the clay. This tells us the base is at end of life even if the lid looks fine from the ground.
  • Mesh torn or missing on one side. Squirrels or raccoons have worked through it, which means animals are getting in and nesting material is likely sitting on your smoke shelf. This is also how chimney fires start when dry nest material meets an ember.
  • The cap sits tilted or moves when touched. The slip-fit base has loosened or a bracket failed. A tilted cap doesn’t shed water correctly and can lift in high wind; Loudoun County gets enough gusts off the Blue Ridge that a loose cap becomes a projectile.
  • Draft problems that appeared suddenly. A collapsed mesh or a lid that has dropped against the flue outlet restricts air movement. You’ll notice smoke backing into the room on start-up or a fireplace that won’t draw as well as it used to.

None of these are cosmetic. A failing cap is the first crack in the system, and in a Leesburg home with a masonry chimney, the repair bill climbs the longer water gets in.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the pricing for Famco chimney cap installation in Leesburg, VA, as of our current rates:

Professional technician performing brick chimney crown repair on a residential roof nationwide
Item Price Range
Single-flue Famco FC cap, standard galvanized (up to 13″ x 13″ flue) $185 - $260 installed
Single-flue Famco FC cap, stainless steel $260 - $385 installed
Famco FCR round-flue cap, stainless $275 - $410 installed
Multi-flue Famco MSC cap (custom bracket mount) $425 - $540 installed
Roof access beyond one story or steep-pitch surcharge $60 - $120 (quoted before work starts)
Old cap removal and haul-away Included with every installation
Camera scan of flue interior before installation Included under Haven Standard Clause 4

Every quote is written before anyone climbs a ladder, per Haven Standard Clause 1: written price, written scope, written warranty. We don’t “call for a quote” and neither do you. The range above goes higher when the flue is oversized, the chase top needs a custom bracket, or the roof is steep enough that we’re setting additional safety lines. We also include a camera scan down the flue on every cap install, because swapping the cap on top of a liner that’s already cracked is putting a fresh lid on a problem you’ll pay for later. You walk away with the cap installed, the old one removed, and a photo record of the flue before and after.

You can safely do the diagnosis from the ground: check the cap with binoculars, look for rust streaks from the yard, and note whether the mesh looks intact. What you can’t safely do is the ladder work. Most Leesburg chimney caps sit on roofs where the flue is the highest point, and working at that height with a metal cap in your hands is a fall risk that isn’t worth trading for a few hundred dollars. Add to that the fact that a wrong-size cap ordered online is a return cycle and a second trip up the ladder, and the math gets worse.

Corrine Halstead has worked every flue configuration the Northeast and Northern Virginia could produce, and she’ll tell you the same thing she tells every Leesburg customer: if you can’t reach the flue from a stable, flat surface with both feet planted, call someone who does this daily. We carry the common FC, FCR, and MSC sizes on the truck, so when we arrive, the job usually ends the same day. Call (571) 601-3174 and we’ll get you on the schedule.
